Business owners in downtown Edmonton are calling on governments to assist with public safety issues as they grapple with the financial burden of implementing additional security measures and addressing their customers’ concerns.
Cheryll Watson, chair of the Downtown Revitalization Coalition, emphasized that businesses should not bear the responsibility of funding security measures to prevent vandalism, break-ins, and other security threats. She made these remarks during a media briefing alongside the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce.
The event, which brought together business leaders and MP Ruby Sahota, the federal secretary of state for combatting crime, aimed to address public safety challenges in Edmonton and their impact on local businesses and economic development.
While acknowledging the positive impact of increased police patrols downtown, Watson and local businesses are advocating for more support. Leslie Boss, owner of Crown & Ember salon, shared her experience of the salon being broken into twice in the past year, highlighting the financial strain of investing in security measures to protect staff and clients.
Boss estimated spending around $2,000 on security cameras, replacing a door, and stolen items following the break-ins. She also noted a concerning rise in drug-related activities in the area, impacting both businesses and customers.
Similarly, Andrea Nguyen, owner of Kumi Nails, recounted incidents of break-ins affecting her business over the years, prompting increased security measures such as keeping doors locked and installing floodlights.
MP Ruby Sahota emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among different levels of government to address public safety concerns while ensuring resources are allocated to mental health, addictions, and housing support. Doug Griffiths, president of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, stressed the importance of addressing underlying issues such as mental health, drug addiction, and homelessness to revitalize downtown areas.
In response to the challenges faced, business owners like Leslie Boss are hopeful that enhanced police presence and increased support for individuals struggling with addiction and other issues will lead to a safer and more vibrant downtown environment.
