Villages in Romania have been emptied out as a precautionary measure after a drone strike hit a ship on the Danube River, sparking concerns of potential conflict with NATO involving Vladimir Putin. The incident occurred when the MT Orinda was targeted while unloading petroleum gas near the Romanian-Ukrainian border, resulting in significant fires and endangering the occupants onboard.
In response, Russia conducted a widespread bombing operation overnight, deploying two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 128 shrike and decoy drones across Ukraine. This aggressive move coincided with French President Emmanuel Macron hosting Volodymyr Zelensky at the Elysee Palace in France to discuss a deal involving the supply of 100 Rafale fighter jets to Kyiv.
The strike on the ship took place at Izmail Port, situated on the border between Romania and Ukraine, prompting Romanian authorities to order the evacuation of nearby villages due to safety concerns. Izmail port is vital for Ukraine’s export activities, making it a strategic target for Russia in its bid to weaken Kyiv’s capabilities.
There were worries that the damaged tanker could explode, leading Romanian officials to focus on extinguishing the fire and safeguarding residents in the area. A statement from Romania’s Tulcea University of Technology shared on Facebook highlighted ongoing efforts by Ukrainian authorities to address the situation, allowing the residents of Ceatalchioi village to return home following a risk assessment that deemed the threat level as low in that area but still elevated in Plauru village.
