“Edmonton Oilers’ Training Camp Marred by Controversy”

The Edmonton Oilers launched their training camp amid fresh off-ice controversy following a tumultuous 2025-26 season that culminated in a first-round playoff exit. The appointment of head coach Mike Babcock in June was met with criticism, but the recent signing of forward Alex Formenton has sparked outrage on social media. Formenton, a member of Canada’s 2018 world junior team, was charged with sexual assault but later acquitted.

Several fans, including sexual assault survivors, have started a petition urging the Oilers to sever ties with Formenton. A demonstration is planned outside Rogers Place ahead of the team’s first home game. Edmonton general manager Stan Bowman acknowledged the varying opinions on the matter but emphasized that thorough due diligence was conducted before offering Formenton a one-year, $850,000 US contract.

Bowman defended the decision, acknowledging the polarizing nature of the signing but expressing confidence in Formenton’s growth and maturity since the incident. The controversy surrounding Formenton’s signing adds to the Oilers’ history of controversial acquisitions, including Babcock and Bowman himself.

The Oilers will kick off on-ice practices under Babcock’s leadership, with key players like Frederik Andersen and Matt Savoie sidelined due to injuries. Andersen, a recent trade acquisition, is expected to share goaltending duties with Tristan Jarry and Devon Levi for the upcoming season.
