EE customers are on high alert due to a resurgence of a text message scam. The fraudulent message prompts recipients to claim their “EE reward points” before they expire by clicking on a link leading to a fake EE website. This scam aims to deceive individuals into providing personal information and money under false pretenses. Reports indicate an increase in such incidents in recent weeks.
Concerned EE users have taken to online forums to warn others. One customer recounted receiving a misleading text regarding rewards and cautioned fellow users to be vigilant. Another user admitted falling for the scam momentarily but realized it was fraudulent and took immediate action to protect themselves.
Phonely, a cybersecurity firm, has observed an increase in reports on its scam-tracking platform, indicating that scammers are impersonating EE by sending messages from random numbers.
In response to the scam, Phonely advises mobile users to exercise caution when receiving unexpected messages related to rewards or benefits that may seem suspicious. Bryn Thompson, Phonely’s Marketing Director, highlighted the sophistication of these scam messages and emphasized the importance of avoiding clicking on links from unknown sources.
EE has clarified that it does not operate a points or rewards program and has provided an example of the fraudulent message to help customers identify such scams. The company urges recipients of such messages to ignore them and refrain from clicking on any embedded links.
The scam message falsely promises EE points to users within a limited timeframe, urging them to click on a link to redeem prizes. EE reiterated that this message is not legitimate and advised customers against engaging with unknown links or sharing personal information.
To stay safe, EE customers are advised to exercise caution and avoid clicking on links or providing personal details in response to messages regarding reward points.
