“Emmy Awards shift to Prime Video in groundbreaking deal”

The Emmy Awards will transition to Prime Video from 2027 onwards through a six-year agreement between Amazon and the Television Academy, marking the end of a long-standing tradition where broadcast networks broadcast the ceremony for over seven decades. This shift to streaming services aligns with the trend of streaming platforms dominating the prestigious categories at the Emmy Awards.

Since 1955, the awards show has been aired annually on one of the four major broadcast networks, with NBC being the first to nationally broadcast it and hosting the most recent ceremony. Over the past thirty years, the hosting rotation has included ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC in what was referred to as the “Wheel Deal.”

A significant change with the new deal is the establishment of a single, long-term home for the Emmy Awards starting from next September’s event. This move aims to bring continuity and stability to the awards show, allowing for consistent growth and improvement over the six-year partnership period.

Viewers can continue to watch the Emmys for free, as the Academy has ensured that no Prime Video subscription will be needed to access the broadcast. This echoes a similar move made by the Oscars, which announced their exclusive streaming partnership with YouTube starting in 2029.

In recent years, the Emmys have experienced a decline in viewership compared to other major awards shows, attracting around seven million viewers, down from over twenty million at its peak. The collaboration with Prime Video presents an opportunity to potentially reverse this trend by leveraging the platform’s reach and promoting Emmy-nominated content to a broader audience.

While acknowledging the significance of transitioning to a streaming platform, the focus remains on honoring excellence in television content, regardless of the delivery method. The Academy emphasizes the importance of recognizing outstanding work in television programming, irrespective of the screen it appears on.

Live streaming events on Amazon have become increasingly common, with the platform hosting various sports and entertainment events. Prime Video aims to offer a blend of live and on-demand content, with a focus on enhancing the viewer experience through its live streaming capabilities.

The Emmy Awards will retain their traditional September slot in 2027, but there is flexibility for potential date changes in the future, as discussed between the Television Academy and Amazon. This adaptability allows for the exploration of alternative scheduling options as the partnership evolves.
