A Calgary man convicted of murder became emotional as the 13-year-old child of his victim delivered a poignant impact statement during his sentencing hearing on Thursday. Faith Lyons tearfully expressed her grief, saying, “I thought I would always have him.” She shared the profound impact of her father, Donald Lyons’s sudden and violent death, stating, “Since his passing, I’ve felt like I’m drowning.”
Donald Lyons was tragically killed in a shooting incident in December 2023, while his girlfriend, Amber Beach, survived the attack. Earlier this year, a jury found Paulos Berhe guilty of second-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the crime, which was described as a drug transaction turned violent.
During the hearing, Sky, Donald Lyons’s adult daughter, also submitted a victim impact statement, highlighting her father’s battle with addiction. She expressed her belief that her father would overcome his struggles given more time, lamenting, “There is no more time, no more chances, no more hope.”
A conviction for second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence with no parole eligibility for a period ranging from 10 to 25 years. The prosecutor recommended a 14-year ineligibility period, while the defense counsel suggested a 10-to-12-year term. In court, Donald’s father, Dale Lyons, shared the ongoing pain of his loss, particularly triggered by sightings of a red Dodge Ram truck, which symbolizes his son’s absence.
Heather Lyons, Donald’s mother, described her son as her best friend and caregiver, emphasizing the irreplaceable void left by his death. She reflected on cherished memories while grappling with the profound sense of loss. Berhe, given the opportunity to speak, expressed remorse and apologized to all those affected, stating, “I never intended for this to happen. I hope for your forgiveness.”
The sentencing decision from Justice David Labrenz is expected in September.
