Essex County Paramedics Reach Tentative Agreement

Essex County paramedics have successfully reached a tentative agreement, averting a potential strike scheduled to commence on Friday, as announced by the union on Tuesday. CUPE Local 2974, which represents approximately 340 paramedics within Essex-Windsor EMS, disclosed that a tentative deal was brokered on Monday night following proactive engagement from the county earlier that day.

James Jovanovic, the local president, expressed relief at the positive turn of events, stating, “I was on the verge of preparing our picket signs, but today we are on track to finalize a tentative agreement.” He highlighted that various factors contributed to the delay in reaching an agreement, with monetary concerns not being the primary issue but rather a combination of factors.

The county, in a news release on Tuesday, announced that if approved, the agreement would be retroactive to April 1, 2026, following the expiry of the previous deal. County of Essex CAO Sandra Zwiers, in the same release, acknowledged the vital role played by Essex-Windsor EMS paramedics and support staff, emphasizing the significance of their work in the community.

Negotiations had previously ended without consensus, leading to the looming strike threat. Jovanovic revealed that EMS workers had unanimously voted in favor of strike action back in February. The union’s concerns centered on staffing levels, mental health support, and compensation, although Jovanovic noted that the differences between the two sides were relatively narrow.

Essex County Council is slated to convene to discuss the agreement on Wednesday, with the union planning information sessions for its members on Thursday and Friday. Jovanovic expressed optimism about the impending outcome, emphasizing the preference for a deal over the possibility of a strike.

The specific details of the agreement will remain undisclosed until the ratification process is finalized, as per the county’s statement.
