Essex County Paramedics Reach Tentative Agreement

Essex County paramedics have reached a tentative agreement, averting a potential strike scheduled to commence this Friday, according to the union. CUPE Local 2974, which represents approximately 340 paramedics at Essex-Windsor EMS, announced that a tentative deal was finalized on Monday night following the county’s outreach to the union earlier that day.

James Jovanovic, President of CUPE Local 2974, expressed relief, stating, “I was on the verge of preparing picket signs, but today we are on track to sign a tentative agreement.” He explained that various factors had stalled the negotiations, with the impasse not solely centered on financial matters but a mix of issues.

Originally, paramedics were poised to strike as early as this Friday after unsuccessful negotiations last week. Jovanovic disclosed that EMS workers had unanimously supported strike action back in February. Concerns raised by the union encompassed staffing levels, mental health support, and compensation, although Jovanovic highlighted that the differences between the parties were relatively minor.

The next step involves Essex County Council reviewing the agreement on Wednesday. Jovanovic mentioned that the union plans to conduct information sessions with its members on Thursday and Friday to provide details about the agreement. He expressed optimism about the outcome, emphasizing the preference for a negotiated deal over the specter of a strike, which was not the desired outcome for anyone involved.
