“Expert Warns Against DIY Ear Cleaning Methods”

Excessive wax in the ears can sometimes feel unclean, leading individuals to attempt self-removal, unaware of the potential harm. A medical professional has cautioned against improper ear cleaning methods, emphasizing the risk of causing “permanent damage” to the ears.

Earwax serves to safeguard and cleanse the ear canal by trapping debris, dust, and microorganisms. The ears naturally expel wax over time as part of their self-cleaning process.

Typically, earwax dries, flakes, and falls out at the ear opening without notice. However, individuals may feel compelled to aid this process at home if they perceive an excessive wax buildup.

Dr. Suraj Kukadia, known as Dr. Sooj online, suggests exploring natural and effective methods before seeking medical assistance. The NHS doctor advises against using items like cotton buds, Q tips, ear candles, or metal tools for ear cleaning, as they can worsen the situation by pushing wax deeper into the ear canal or causing damage.

For safe at-home care, olive oil or sodium bicarbonate ear drops can be used if an excess of earwax is confirmed. Applying a few drops to the affected ear twice daily for up to four weeks can help soften the wax and aid in its natural expulsion. If the ear remains blocked, a doctor can perform gentle irrigation or microsuction to remove the wax, cautioning against DIY extraction.

Dr. Sooj highlights the delicate nature of the human eardrum, likening it to being “thinner than paper,” and warns of potential damage from mishandling, which could result in pain, infection, hearing impairment, or permanent harm.

Signs of earwax accumulation include:

Various factors contribute to earwax build-up, with most cases resolving naturally. Genetic predispositions may play a role, such as increased wax production or having narrower or hairier ear canals that trap more wax than they expel.

Activities like chewing and talking aid in wax movement within the ear canal. It is generally recommended to refrain from attempting to clean the ears internally and allowing the natural cleaning process to occur.

According to the NHS website: “Earwax build-up cannot be prevented as it serves to protect the ears from dirt and germs. However, using eardrops, olive oil, or almond oil regularly can help soften earwax build-up, facilitating its natural removal and preventing blockages.”
