Faith Communities in London Seek Candidate Engagement

Some faith communities in London express concerns about the lack of communication from candidates ahead of the upcoming municipal election on Oct. 26. Representatives from churches, mosques, and faith-based organizations, which have strong ties to London residents through various community activities, report not being contacted by mayoral or ward candidates during the election campaign.

Michael Wojtak, a business manager at the London North Central Catholic Family of Parishes, emphasized the diverse nature of their congregation and the importance of addressing specific issues affecting different communities within the city. Similarly, the Rev. Aidan Armstrong of St. George’s Anglican Church highlighted the need for candidates to engage with faith communities given their frontline role in assisting individuals seeking support.

Despite the lack of direct outreach to congregations by candidates, one faith organization, the Hikma Public Affairs Council, took proactive steps by sending a questionnaire to mayoral and city council candidates. The questionnaire aimed to gather insights on campaign priorities, community issues, and candidate perspectives. This initiative received responses from a portion of the candidates contacted, facilitating discussions on topics such as affordability, transit, anti-Islamophobia measures, and newcomer support.

According to Nawaz Tahir from Hikma, the questionnaire not only provided valuable information for voter education but also spurred additional interactions with candidates, demonstrating a willingness to engage with diverse community perspectives. Tahir emphasized the importance of understanding and addressing the needs of the Muslim community during the election process.

Various faith leaders across London, including those at St. George’s Anglican Church and St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica, highlighted prevalent concerns within their congregations and communities such as cost of living, housing, transportation, and public safety. They emphasized the importance of inclusive dialogue between candidates and faith communities to address shared challenges and contribute to effective governance.

Overall, the proactive engagement of the Hikma Public Affairs Council and the concerns raised by faith leaders underscore the significance of involving diverse community voices in the electoral process and fostering meaningful dialogue on critical issues affecting London residents.
