“Families Navigate AI Challenges with ‘The Family Chat’ Initiative”

Artificial intelligence (AI) is significantly impacting our daily lives, posing a challenge for parents to keep up with the rapid changes. Families are increasingly assisting their children in navigating a digital environment saturated with AI, present in social media, schoolwork, and friendships, as emphasized during the recent Safer Internet Day.

In the year 2026, we have collaborated with Tesco Mobile, a supporter of Safer Internet Day, to urge families to engage in “The Family Chat” about smartphones. This initiative aims to facilitate open and honest discussions at home about online safety, alleviating the perceived complexity of the task.

Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, along with her husband Tom, will engage with parents and children to address the challenges they encounter.

The initial family dialogue delves into the realm of AI and highlights Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub as a valuable tool to aid parents with children of all ages up to 18.

Similar to many families, the Karleys – Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17) – heavily rely on their devices for connectivity. However, Anna and Emmanuel acknowledge their limited understanding of AI, which poses a safety concern.

Anna candidly admits, “I’m not adept at identifying AI. There have been instances where I’ve admired images only for my kids to point out, ‘That’s AI, Mom!'”

Moreover, distinguishing between authentic and fake content remains a challenge for them, especially on platforms like TikTok, where highly convincing AI content abounds.

For most children, academic tasks now involve online components, often aided by AI-generated research, presenting a shared concern for the Karleys and Giovanna.

Giovanna notes, “I’ve observed that my eldest, attending secondary school, encounters mostly computer-based homework. As parents, our focus should not be on discrediting AI’s utility in academics but rather on assessing its optimal use continually.”

To ensure your children’s safe engagement with AI, consider these strategies:

1. Discover AI Together: Enhance AI exploration by engaging as a family, fostering creativity and collaboration.

2. AI Fallibility: Educate children about AI inaccuracies, encouraging fact-checking and source verification.

3. Age Restrictions and Privacy: Adhere to age restrictions on AI platforms, and review privacy settings collaboratively for a secure online experience.

4. Reality Check: Initiate conversations about discerning genuine information from fake content, instilling digital literacy skills.

5. AI as a Tool, Not a Crutch: Encourage the use of AI as a supplementary resource, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Karleys appreciate having a trusted source like Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for guidance. This resource offers user-friendly materials and toolkits to facilitate discussions about AI safety with children, featuring age-appropriate advice developed in partnership with the UK Safer Internet Centre.

Furthermore, the hub includes interactive AI quizzes from the UK Safer Internet Centre, fostering family engagement and learning. The Karley family, who regularly discuss online safety, finds the hub a valuable asset in enhancing their support for their children.

Emmanuel expresses, “We can now delve into it together, broaden our understanding, and improve our support for them.”
