A tragic incident unfolded during a family vacation in Istanbul, as authorities suspect that a family-of-four, consisting of two young children, perished due to pesticide poisoning from a bedbug treatment at their hotel. The victims, identified as Cigdem Bocek, 27, Servet Bocek, 38, Masal Bocek, three, and Kadir Muhammet Bocek, six, fell severely ill in their hotel room in Istanbul and later succumbed to the poisoning. Initially, it was believed that they suffered from food poisoning after consuming local street food.
Law enforcement officials have apprehended 11 individuals, including hotel staff, following concerns that aluminium phosphide, used in the bedbug treatment on the hotel’s ground floor, may have infiltrated the family’s room through the bathroom ventilation system, leading to their tragic demise. Aluminium phosphide is a potent pesticide known to be lethal if inhaled in large quantities. Additionally, investigators discovered that one employee of the pest control company lacked the necessary certification.
As a precautionary measure, the hotel has been evacuated and sealed off for further investigation. Law enforcement officers have been collecting samples from various items within the hotel for analysis, including bedsheets, pillows, water bottles, and blankets. Furthermore, belongings of two other guests, an Italian and a Moroccan tourist, were removed for testing after they also exhibited symptoms of poisoning.
The Bocek family, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, arrived at the hotel in Istanbul on November 9 and sought medical attention two days later due to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. Tragically, Cigdem and the children passed away shortly after, while Servet succumbed to the poisoning after six days in intensive care. The family was laid to rest in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initially detained seven individuals, including street food vendors, as part of the investigation. The Forensic Medicine Institute analyzed samples from the food establishments visited by the family. The children’s grandfather expressed his intention to seek justice for his daughter and her family, emphasizing the importance of holding those responsible accountable.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pledged a thorough investigation by security forces and prosecutors to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths.
