Two individuals have lost their lives, and a total of 17 people are now without homes following a fire that broke out in a Windsor apartment early on Sunday, as confirmed by fire officials. The incident occurred at Dorchester Apartments around 2 a.m., according to Chris Kreibich, who is the acting chief of fire prevention at Windsor Fire and Rescue Services. Within the suite were three women, all in their 70s, mentioned Kreibich. Sadly, one woman was declared deceased at the scene, while another was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Tragically, fire officials were notified on Tuesday that the latter had succumbed to her injuries, shared Kreibich. The third woman received medical treatment at the hospital and was later discharged. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office spearheaded the investigation into the fire, although the cause remains unknown, Kreibich added, emphasizing that foul play is not suspected. The fire originated in the living room of the unit, causing heat, fire, and smoke damage to the seventh floor, elevator destruction, and water and smoke damage to the sixth floor. The elevators are projected to remain nonfunctional for a few days, as per a City of Windsor representative. Displaced residents promptly received assistance and lodging from the Canadian Red Cross post-fire, according to a city spokesperson who corresponded with CBC via email. The email stated that the City of Windsor Social Services team had also engaged with the affected individuals to assess any further assistance requirements.
