A woman from the UK was discovered buried in a shallow grave in Florida after reportedly expressing a desire for a violent death to a man she had met on a fetish website. Sonia Exelby, 32, from Portsmouth, had traveled to the United States seeking individuals willing to kill her, as stated in a Florida police affidavit.
Her body was found in a wooded area in Marion Oaks, Florida, shortly after she missed her return flight on October 13. An autopsy confirmed that she had died from four stab wounds.
Dwain Hall, 53, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and kidnapping charges, which he denies. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. Authorities allege that Hall and Sonia connected through a fetish website, with reports indicating that Sonia had suicidal intentions and was traveling to the US to potentially endure sexual abuse, torture, and murder.
According to officials, Hall picked Sonia up from Gainesville Regional Airport upon her arrival from the UK and took her to an Airbnb in Reddick, Marion County, a reservation she had made using her credit card prior to her trip. Before her arrival, Hall allegedly purchased gun cleaner, rope, and a shovel from a nearby store.
Prior to departing the UK, a concerned friend raised an alarm on Instagram, expressing worries about Sonia’s vulnerable state. The friend indicated that Sonia had flown to Tallahassee, Florida, and found herself in a precarious situation.
An affidavit revealed that Hall initially denied knowing Sonia but later confessed to meeting her at the airport and driving her to the Airbnb. Video evidence showed Sonia with visible bruises on her face, neck, and breasts, prompting detectives to note her distress.
Further messages from Sonia to a friend disclosed her fear and desperation, indicating that she felt trapped and coerced by Hall. Hall, who admitted to having violent inclinations, claimed Sonia wanted to be killed and engaged in discussions about bondage and suicide.
After Sonia’s death, Hall attempted to use her credit cards, leading to his apprehension. Investigators uncovered evidence linking Hall to the crime, including a blade with Sonia’s blood and a shovel with traces of her DNA. Hall is awaiting further legal proceedings, which may involve a grand jury decision on formal charges and the potential consideration of the death penalty.
Authorities have emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards such violent crimes, ensuring accountability for perpetrators. The Foreign Office is assisting Sonia’s family and cooperating with authorities in Florida in the ongoing investigation.
