The Orange County Fire Authority reported that the Norte Fire had razed four homes and prompted the opening of two evacuation centers. Residents under evacuation orders were urged to evacuate immediately.
The blaze originated in San Clemente and was propelled by the wind into San Juan Capistrano. This fire was one of many burning in the region, fueled by dry, warm, and gusty Santa Ana winds blowing from inland Southern California toward the coast and out to sea.
Evacuations were enforced due to the fires, leaving tens of thousands without power in the state after electricity shutdowns. The affected areas are situated in southern Orange County, close to the coast and surrounded by hills. San Juan Capistrano, with a population of 35,000, is recognized for its horse trails, while San Clemente, home to 62,000 residents, is a popular destination for beach enthusiasts and surfers.
Victor Cabral, a San Clemente city council member, disclosed school closures, activity cancellations, and mass evacuations due to the encroaching fire. The fire posed a direct threat to the northern edge of their homes, according to Cabral.
In Malibu, a town west of Los Angeles, a fire prompted evacuation orders and warnings for a significant portion of the Santa Monica Mountains. Strong winds ranging from 32 km/h to 56 km/h were predicted, with gusts expected to reach 80 km/h to 112 km/h in specific areas, as forecasted by the U.S. National Weather Service.
Over 400 firefighters battled the Bryson Fire, which had expanded to 100 hectares by Friday morning. The fire had endangered a Los Angeles County juvenile detention facility, resulting in a mandatory evacuation. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who faced criticism for her handling of previous fires, deployed resources in advance of the high winds. The region was advised to remain vigilant due to elevated fire weather conditions.
Throughout Southern California, firefighters were actively containing two other fires that erupted on Thursday, triggering evacuation orders in Azusa and Camp Pendleton. Poweroutage.com reported over 175,000 customers without electricity in various parts of California. Utilities have been proactively shutting off power during dry, windy conditions to mitigate wildfire risks, as some of California’s worst wildfires have been initiated by power equipment malfunctions.
