“Former Labour Chancellor Ends Two-Child Limit to Lift Half a Million Kids Out of Poverty”

I advocate for every child born in this nation to have an equal opportunity to establish a fulfilling life, including access to quality education, a comfortable residence, and regular meals. In my commitment to creating a more just and prosperous society, I unveiled the elimination of the two-child limit during last year’s Budget.

The previous administration’s enforcement of this restriction deprived numerous children of essential necessities like food, warmth, and clothing, exacerbating financial struggles for many families. This policy also introduced the controversial rape clause into our welfare system. As the former Labour Chancellor, I take pride in lifting this cap and implementing initiatives such as free breakfast clubs and school meals for children whose parents are on Universal Credit, with the goal of lifting over half a million kids out of poverty by 2030.

These measures will offer half a million children a better foundation for their future, providing them with the opportunity to attend school without the burdens imposed by poverty. Recently, I met with some of these children and advocates for women’s rights at Downing Street, where I witnessed their relief, determination, and stories of resilience in the face of adversity.

Today, Parliament will vote on measures to support these families, marking a significant step in dismantling a harmful policy that has plagued many for too long. While I am clear on my decision when I vote tonight, it will be up to the Conservatives and Reform to justify their choices. However, our efforts must not end here; we must continue to strive for a society where every child receives a fair start in life and where every parent is treated with dignity, respect, and the necessary support. This is my commitment and the reason I entered politics and government.
