A 31-year-old former Surrey RCMP officer, Dawwd Soukary, has been sentenced to 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to breach of trust. The sentencing was issued by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Murray Blok in New Westminster, who accepted a joint sentencing recommendation from both the Crown and defence.
The breach of trust charge that Soukary admitted to involved multiple instances where he accessed confidential police information and shared it with criminal associates between 2020 and 2021. Soukary, who was a probationary officer at the time, had allegedly planned to misuse police databases once he was no longer under supervision.
The investigation into Soukary began in August 2020 based on a tip and CCTV footage showing him involved in drug transactions. Police set up a fake undercover operation, posing as corrupt officers, to expose Soukary’s misconduct. During this operation, Soukary engaged in various scenarios, ultimately leading to his arrest after attempting to purchase cocaine for $70,000 but negotiating a lower price and pocketing the difference.
Despite Soukary’s lack of previous criminal record and his guilty plea, the court deemed that a jail sentence was necessary due to the severity of his actions. Soukary, who resigned from the RCMP in 2021, currently resides in Ottawa, where he is involved in co-parenting his daughter and works at a sports and fitness facility.
