“Former Reform UK Leader Jailed for Russian Bribes”

A former leader of Reform UK in Wales, previously a close associate of Nigel Farage, has been sentenced to prison for accepting bribes from Russia during his time as a Member of the European Parliament. Nathan Gill, 52, confessed to receiving illicit payments to promote a pro-Russian agenda and deliver scripted speeches on television. The court learned that he received funds from Oleg Voloshyn, identified by the US government as a proxy for the Russian security services.

Counter terrorism officials uncovered incriminating WhatsApp exchanges between Gill and Voloshyn, exposing their unlawful activities following Gill’s detainment at Manchester Airport in 2021. Sentencing him to 10-and-a-half years, Judge Mrs. Justice Cheema-Grubb condemned his actions as a severe betrayal of the trust placed in him by his constituents.

The judge emphasized that Gill had abused his position of authority and breached the trust of his constituents for personal and financial gain. She noted that his actions compromised the integrity of the European Parliament, particularly in its dealings with Russia, a nation known for its antagonistic stance, especially following the 2017 association agreement between the EU and Ukraine.

Additionally, evidence presented in court revealed Gill’s involvement in arranging meetings for fellow Brexit Party MPs with a close ally of Vladimir Putin, Victor Medvedchuk, whom he publicly supported. In response to these revelations, Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey called for a thorough investigation into Russian interference in UK politics.

Furthermore, armed forces minister Al Carns demanded that Reform UK conduct a comprehensive inquiry into Gill’s actions, labeling them as disgraceful. Carns stressed the importance of rooting out any influence from autocratic regimes that threaten national security.

Prosecutor Mark Heywood KC detailed a series of incriminating messages exchanged between Gill and Voloshyn, indicating agreements to act in a specific manner in exchange for financial compensation. The prosecutor highlighted the severity of Gill’s actions, specifying that they fell within the highest category of culpability due to the significant impact on the European Parliament and its relations with foreign entities.

Gill, who served as an MEP for UKIP and later the Brexit Party from 2014 to 2020, was described by the leader of Reform UK as a “bad apple” following his admission of guilt. Gill briefly led Reform UK Wales in 2021 but is no longer affiliated with the party.

Commenting on the case, Security Minister Dan Jarvis denounced Gill’s actions as a betrayal of the UK’s interests and national security. He affirmed the government’s commitment to combatting foreign interference and ensuring that those who compromise national values are held accountable.

In response to the sentencing, a spokesperson for Reform UK condemned Gill’s behavior as treacherous and welcomed the legal outcome as a form of justice for his actions. Defense counsel Peter Wright acknowledged the severity of Gill’s offenses and expressed remorse on his behalf for betraying the trust placed in him.

The disgraced politician, hailing from Anglesey, North Wales, used his parliamentary platform to advocate for media outlets linked to Vladimir Putin’s associates. Gill’s support for these channels, coupled with his involvement in facilitating meetings and delivering speeches on their behalf, further underscored his illicit activities and breach of public trust.
