Fort Good Hope Resident Pleads Not Guilty to Drug Trafficking

A resident of Fort Good Hope, Northwest Territories, has entered a plea of not guilty to drug trafficking charges dating back to 2025. Marie Erutse was apprehended in her community after law enforcement confiscated slightly over half a pound of suspected crack cocaine following a tip-off indicating that a woman would be arriving with alcohol. While the community has limitations on alcohol consumption, it is not entirely banned.

During a virtual court appearance from the Fort Smith Correctional Complex on Tuesday, Erutse formally denied the accusations. Additionally, she was facing a distinct drug trafficking charge brought forth this year.

Authorities received information about an individual involved in the drug trade, who had been previously caught transporting illicit substances and was now traveling through Norman Wells to Fort Good Hope under suspicious circumstances. Upon her arrest, law enforcement officers discovered approximately 437 grams of suspected crack cocaine and related drug-related items in Erutse’s possession. However, the charges related to this incident have been temporarily put on hold, as indicated in court records.

In response to queries from CBC News, Marissa Martin, a representative for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, declined to provide further details regarding the Crown’s decision, stating that they consistently evaluate cases to ensure their viability for prosecution. The decision to prosecute is based on the presence of a reasonable chance of conviction and the public interest. If a case no longer meets these criteria, the Crown may opt to stay proceedings.

Erutse is scheduled to appear in court on November 10 to establish a trial date.
