A woman successfully shed 18st 7.5lbs, going from 29st 5lbs to 10st 11.5lbs without resorting to injections, medications, or surgical procedures. Claire Kane realized the need for a lifestyle change as her weight approached 30 stone, causing difficulties in walking and infertility issues. Claire and her husband had been trying to conceive, but her weight posed a challenge. She recounted, “I married Aaron in 2009, but my weight kept increasing. At nearly 30st, simple tasks like walking 200 meters left me breathless. Despite our desire for a family, it seemed unattainable.”
Struggling with infertility due to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis for seven years, Claire decided to join Slimming World with the intention of losing weight to qualify for IVF treatment. Claire, residing in Airdrie, Scotland, shared, “I had tried various diets before, but none seemed to work. Walking into the group was intimidating, fearing judgment based on my size; however, I was warmly welcomed. The plan outlined by my Consultant felt practical and attainable, resonating with me instantly.”
After shedding 8st 7½lbs within nine months, Claire miraculously conceived naturally. She expressed her joy, saying, “It was unbelievable. Aaron and I had been waiting for this moment for years – we were ecstatic.” Despite her success, Claire faced challenges following the loss of her father to cancer and the birth of her second child during the Covid lockdown. Overwhelmed by her responsibilities, she resorted to convenience foods, leading to weight gain. Determined to make a change, Claire rejoined Slimming World in August 2022, committing to attending group sessions weekly, which she credits as a pivotal decision.
Embracing Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising, Claire transitioned from monotonous meals to colorful, nutritious options, altering her food habits significantly. She shared, “Previously, my day would start with sugary cereal, followed by a packaged sandwich for lunch, and end with frozen nuggets and chips from the freezer. Now, I prioritize satisfying family meals and focus on protein for long-lasting satiety. The group discussions helped me understand my food behaviors and incorporate my favorite foods in a healthier manner.”
Inspired by her Slimming World group, Claire adopted a more active lifestyle, gradually incorporating exercise into her routine. She reflected, “Initially, exercise seemed daunting, but with Slimming World’s active lifestyle program, I learned to start at my own pace. As the weight dropped, I began using gym equipment during lunch breaks at work. Now, I enjoy running around with my kids and have participated in various challenges, including a local 10k Race for Life. Exercise is now an integral part of my daily routine, supporting long-term weight maintenance.”
Presently weighing 10st 11½lbs, Claire was recognized as Slimming World’s Woman of the Year 2025. She remarked, “If someone had told me when I was nearly 30st that I would achieve this, I would never have believed it. People often inquire if I resorted to weight-loss drugs or surgery, options I qualified for but feared. I take pride in stating that my transformation was solely through Slimming World – it has been an incredible journey.”
Claire elaborated, “I can now actively engage with my children, chase them around, and swim with them. Last year, we visited Disney World, where I walked 20,000 steps daily and enjoyed every ride without concerns about fitting. However, my greatest accomplishment remains my beautiful children. At my heaviest, the prospect of having a family seemed bleak, but now, I am paving the way for their healthy and happy future. Slimming World has granted me the life I aspired to have, and I want others to realize that no matter how daunting the journey appears, progress is achievable step by step.”
Claire hopes that sharing her journey will inspire others facing similar challenges, emphasizing, “If you believe it’s too late or too difficult, know that it isn’t. Having experienced rock bottom, I stand here today as Woman of the Year. If I can do it, so can you.”
