German Court Rejects FSV Mainz 05 Appeal in El Ghazi Case

FSV Mainz 05, a German Bundesliga team, has had their appeal denied regarding the dismissal of Anwar El Ghazi. El Ghazi, a Dutch footballer who previously played in the Premier League for Aston Villa and Everton, had his contract terminated in November 2023 due to comments made about the Israel-Gaza conflict.

After leaving Mainz, El Ghazi joined Cardiff City and is currently playing for Al Sailiya in Qatar. The player was initially suspended by Mainz in October 2023 following his social media posts. Mainz justified the termination of his contract, stating that his comments on the Middle East conflict were unacceptable to the club.

Despite Mainz’s decision to dismiss El Ghazi, a German court ruled that the termination was wrongful. The club’s appeal against this ruling has now been rejected, as confirmed by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Labor Court.

Mainz expressed their stance, acknowledging the court’s decision but maintaining their values and principles. Mainz Chairman Stefan Hoffmann emphasized that while the court ruled in El Ghazi’s favor, the club stands by its commitment to not employ individuals whose actions conflict with their core values.

El Ghazi has not publicly commented on the recent ruling but had previously expressed confidence in a positive outcome regarding his case with Mainz. He also mentioned his dedication to supporting the people of Gaza through financial contributions from the settlement with Mainz.
