A 13-year-old girl sought help from the police due to recurring nightmares involving the ghost of a headless woman. Unbeknownst to the officers initially, this led to a chilling investigation. The girl, known as Ah Fong in court, revealed she had been manipulated by a dangerous gang and witnessed the brutal torture of a young woman.
Upon visiting the apartment where the atrocities occurred, the police were immediately struck by a foul odor. They made a gruesome discovery of the dismembered body of Fan Man-yee, a nightclub hostess abducted by a triad member over a debt. Fan’s remains were found in bags scattered around the flat in Hong Kong’s Kowloon district.
Further searches at the Granville Road apartment revealed more unsettling details. Fan’s skull was hidden inside a Hello Kitty mermaid plushie among a room filled with Hello Kitty merchandise. Investigations pieced together the horrors Fan endured at the hands of gangsters Chan Man-lok, Leung Shing-cho, and Leung Wai-lun, who subjected her to torture for weeks.
Ah Fong’s testimony, given in exchange for immunity, detailed the heinous acts Fan suffered, including burning, beatings, and cruel restraints. The perpetrators, despite admitting to preventing a proper burial, denied killing Fan, shifting blame during the trial. They were convicted of manslaughter due to insufficient evidence to determine the exact cause of death.
The court sentenced the men to life imprisonment, condemning their cruelty and violence. The case, known as the ‘Hello Kitty murder,’ left a lasting impact on the community, with residents believing the apartment to be haunted by Fan’s spirit. The building was eventually demolished in 2012, but the memory of this gruesome crime lingers in Hong Kong’s history.
