Former Australian cricket star Glenn McGrath has been removed as a commentator by ABC, the host broadcaster, due to his association with a betting company. Known as one of the greatest fast bowlers in history, McGrath has been a regular presence at the Ashes matches in recent times.
Having claimed 563 wickets in 124 Test matches for Australia, the 55-year-old was a formidable opponent for England in the Ashes series. Despite his success in six Ashes series with Australia, his commentary role at the upcoming first Test in Perth on Friday will be absent from ABC’s coverage.
While McGrath will still contribute to BBC’s Test Match Special, he will not be featured as a pundit or commentator by ABC. The decision to part ways with McGrath was influenced by his upcoming collaboration with the betting company Bet365, mirroring the previous exclusion of ex-Australian bowler Mitchell Johnson for similar reasons.
In response to the situation, ABC stated that they and McGrath have mutually agreed to separate for the Ashes series. They expressed anticipation of working with McGrath in the future and highlighted their commentary team’s readiness for the upcoming matches.
McGrath will continue to play a significant role in the BBC’s Ashes coverage, including live radio commentary and highlight shows, alongside a lineup of fellow commentators. In his typical confident style, McGrath predicted a 5-0 victory for the home side, emphasizing the challenge England may face given Australia’s strong bowling lineup and their own historical struggles in Australian conditions.
