“Global Leaders Unite Against Trump’s Ukraine Proposal”

Ukraine has been cautioned against yielding territory or reducing its military strength, as emphasized by Donald Trump. Global leaders convened urgent discussions on Ukraine during the G20 summit in South Africa, rejecting certain aspects of the US President’s peace initiative.

A collective statement by Keir Starmer and other G7 leaders, excluding the US, emphasized that Ukraine’s borders should not be altered through coercion. The Prime Minister, speaking in Johannesburg, mentioned an upcoming conversation with Mr. Trump. Additionally, Mr. Starmer is expected to communicate with Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Prime Minister confirmed no plans to visit Washington DC, prioritizing immediate talks in Geneva. Key officials from the US and Ukraine are scheduled for urgent discussions in Switzerland, with the presence of US special envoy Steve Witkoff and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The UK’s National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell will partake in the Geneva talks following an early departure from the G20 summit. Mr. Trump has outlined a stringent deadline of November 27 for Ukraine to respond to his proposal, emphasizing the necessity for consensus among all relevant parties, including the EU and NATO.

The leaked 28-point peace plan by Mr. Trump includes provisions for an instant ceasefire and Ukraine ceding Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk to Russia. Concerns have been raised by Mr. Starmer and allies regarding the proposed limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces, emphasizing the importance of a just and enduring peace agreement.

A joint statement from the UK, France, Germany, and other nations expressed support for the US efforts for peace in Ukraine, while stressing the need for further refinement of the plan. President Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to safeguarding national interests and preventing potential invasions by Russia.

As discussions progress, the focus remains on securing sustainable peace in the war-torn region, with various countries affirming their backing for Ukraine’s stability. Russian President Vladimir Putin cautiously welcomed the US initiative, suggesting it could serve as a framework for a final peace resolution.
