“Gloucestershire Mother Seeks Funds for Life-Changing Jaw Surgery”

A mother from Gloucestershire, Naomi Smith, 47, has been enduring severe jaw pain for years, leading to her current inability to open her mouth wider than 14mm. She expressed her frustration at feeling neglected by the healthcare system. Naomi’s journey with jaw pain and teeth grinding began at 18, gradually worsening over the years, making everyday activities like eating and drinking unbearable by 2014. Despite numerous medical appointments and varying diagnoses, including fibromyalgia and functional bowel disease, Naomi’s condition deteriorated.

Naomi, a former children’s social, emotional, and mental health tutor, had to give up her job in 2024 due to escalating pain levels. Her partner, Darryl Brooks, is now seeking funds for her much-needed jaw-replacement surgery to alleviate her suffering. Naomi shared her distressing experience of feeling ignored by the medical system, highlighting the toll it has taken on her physically and mentally, affecting not only her but also her children who witness her decline.

After being diagnosed in 2025 with severe temporomandibular joint disorder and severe jaw arthritis, Naomi’s hope lies in a life-changing jaw replacement surgery. Despite undergoing various treatments, including Botox and acupuncture, Naomi still struggles with constant facial pain, migraines, and other debilitating symptoms. Her jaw’s limited movement restricts her daily activities, compelling her to rely on strong medications to manage the pain and muscle tightness.

Despite the diagnosis, Naomi faces a prolonged wait for surgery through the NHS, prompting her to consider private treatment options. Darryl has initiated a fundraiser to cover the expenses associated with private surgery, travel, and loss of earnings. The couple’s GoFundMe page aims to raise £95,000 to support Naomi’s journey towards a pain-free life.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust expressed regret over the challenges Naomi faced in obtaining a timely diagnosis and reassured that her case is receiving serious attention. They emphasized their commitment to providing the best care possible and working closely with Naomi to explore all avenues for symptom relief and improved quality of life.
