“Grande Prairie Welcomes New Police Service”

Alberta’s Grande Prairie has welcomed its first new municipal police service in seven decades. The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) officially replaced the RCMP on Wednesday, with a ceremony held to mark the occasion and new signage unveiled at the GPPS headquarters, which was formerly the RCMP detachment.

Chief Dwayne Lakusta expressed his delight at the earlier-than-expected transition, crediting the support from city council and local RCMP for facilitating the changeover. The decision to establish the GPPS was made by the city council in 2023, and it has been operating alongside the RCMP in Grande Prairie since 2024. Moving forward, all police calls within city limits will now be handled by the GPPS.

With 80 sworn officers in its ranks following the recent graduation of a new recruit class, Lakusta noted a balanced mix of experienced officers and fresh recruits within the service. Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Mike Ellis commended the efforts in building the new police service and announced an additional $2 million in provincial funding to support the transition, bringing the total provincial contribution to around $19 million.

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton estimated the total transition cost to be approximately $23 million, emphasizing the shift towards a more localized approach to policing. The establishment of the city’s new Public Safety Communication Centre, integrating fire and police dispatch services, will be supported by the new funding. The RCMP, which has been serving the region for over 120 years, originally assumed policing duties in 1943.

Criminology expert Kelly Sundberg highlighted Grande Prairie’s transition as a potential model for other municipalities, emphasizing the need for law enforcement strategies to adapt as communities grow. Sundberg noted a trend towards community-focused policing, citing the establishment of Indigenous police forces in Alberta. He anticipates that Alberta’s move towards a provincial police service will accelerate the shift away from RCMP contract policing in the province.

Overall, the establishment of the GPPS is seen as a significant step towards community-oriented policing, setting a high standard for future transitions in law enforcement.
