Grief-Stricken Foam Lake Mourns Loss of Three

In Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, the community is showing signs of mourning following the recent loss of three members. Stuffed animals can be seen on the doorsteps of several homes in the town, located approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Regina, in honor of two young girls who tragically passed away.

The victims, a five-year-old, an eight-year-old, and a 40-year-old woman, lost their lives in a collision between their SUV and a truck attempting to overtake a semi-truck, as reported by the RCMP. A man who was also in the SUV sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital by STARS air ambulance.

Residents of Foam Lake revealed to CBC that the individuals in the SUV were a family, although their identities have not been disclosed. The driver of the truck, identified as 40-year-old Kelly Knopf from Sumter, South Carolina, and a passenger were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, while another passenger with severe injuries was airlifted by STARS, according to the RCMP.

Following an investigation, Knopf was arrested and charged with three counts each of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm. He is expected to be transferred to Regina correctional center on Monday, with his court appearance in Yorkton provincial court postponed due to his hospitalization.

Knopf’s lawyer, Brian Pfefferle, represented him via phone during the court proceedings. Pfefferle provided a statement on behalf of Knopf, emphasizing that there is currently no evidence indicating the involvement of alcohol, drugs, or excessive speed in the accident. The statement mentioned that Knopf had traveled to Saskatchewan from South Carolina for a hunting trip, a tradition he has maintained for several years, establishing connections within the community.

Acknowledging the support and compassion received from the community during this tragic event, Pfefferle expressed gratitude on behalf of Knopf and his family. The lawyer anticipates addressing Knopf’s potential release by Wednesday as the legal proceedings continue.
