The family of an 11-year-old boy who tragically died in a bicycle accident in Quebec City’s Beauport neighborhood has decided to cancel the installation of a ghost bike in his memory this weekend due to receiving hurtful messages.
The father of the late 11-year-old, Alex Côté, made the announcement regarding the change of plans. He mentioned that despite not disclosing the nature of the messages they received, the family felt it was best to withdraw from the ghost bike installation to maintain a positive and respectful atmosphere during the upcoming event.
Dominic Côté expressed that the family’s initial intention behind the planned ghost bike was to spread awareness about cycling safety in the area while honoring their son with love. The ceremony was organized in collaboration with Souliers et vélos fantômes Québec, a group that assists families in creating bike memorials to commemorate fatal accidents with white bikes.
The family has decided to postpone the memorial event for a more suitable time in the future. The tragic incident involving Alex occurred during the summer at the intersection of des Sablonnières Avenue and Raymond Boulevard, where he was found in cardiac arrest and later passed away at the hospital.
The unfortunate incident has reignited calls from concerned parents and road safety advocates for enhanced safety measures in residential areas where children frequently walk and cycle. Mathieu Murphy-Perron, a member of Souliers et vélos fantômes Québec, revealed witnessing inappropriate comments directed at the Côté family, emphasizing the need for compassion and understanding during such difficult times.
Moreover, Quebec City Mayor Bruno Marchand expressed his deep dismay over the situation, condemning the disrespectful behavior exhibited by some residents and drivers towards the grieving family. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring the safety of children and residents in the city.
Local residents, including Manon Carignan, have emphasized the urgent need for improvements on des Sablonnières Avenue to create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, especially considering the presence of schools, parks, and families in the area. The community stands united in support of the Côté family during this challenging period.
