Metro Vancouver is notifying outdoor enthusiasts about the upcoming closure of the popular Grouse Grind trail for maintenance. The closure will last for four weeks starting from October 13 to November 13. The Metro Vancouver Regional District stated that the closure is necessary for crews to conduct repairs and replacements on steps, staircases, and retaining walls along the trail.
Due to the rugged and steep terrain of the Grouse Grind, a complete closure is required as there are no alternative routes available. During this period, hikers are encouraged to explore the BCMC trail, a 2.9-kilometre hike that commences at the same trailhead and leads to the summit of Grouse Mountain. Described as a challenging trail, the BCMC typically takes two to two-and-a-half hours to complete.
For safety, hikers embarking on the BCMC trail are advised to wear durable hiking shoes with ankle support, carry an ample water supply and snacks, and bring an extra layer of clothing. Safety advocates recommend that individuals venturing into the backcountry always carry the “10 essentials” when on mountain trails to ensure preparedness.
