“Gruffalo Granny” Marks Final Chapter in Iconic Series

Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently discussed her latest book, “Gruffalo Granny,” in an interview. Donaldson initially had doubts about the success of her iconic book “The Gruffalo” due to its dark themes and rhyming style not being in vogue in 1999. However, the book defied expectations and became a hit. Now, after 26 years, “Gruffalo Granny” marks the third and likely final installment in the series.

The new book follows the original Gruffalo and his child preparing for the arrival of Gruffalo Granny, who is known for her huge appetite. Donaldson shared that the writing process for “Gruffalo Granny” was similar to that of “The Gruffalo” as she focused on crafting a compelling story without overly considering the readers’ perspectives.

While Donaldson expressed that she won’t be writing any more Gruffalo books, she continues her career as a children’s writer. Her upcoming book, “Winnifred Duck,” illustrated by Jim Fields, is inspired by the true story of rubber ducks lost at sea and the lessons they taught scientists about ocean currents.

“Gruffalo Granny” has been a massive success, becoming the best-selling book in the UK across all genres and age groups in 2026, just 10 days after its release. The book has resonated with both new and old fans of the franchise, with many adults passing on the tradition of reading Gruffalo books to their children and grandchildren.

Donaldson’s creativity and collaboration with illustrator Axel Scheffler continue to captivate readers, and while her time with the Gruffalo characters may have ended, her impact on children’s literature remains strong.
