After thirty years, Canadiana Village has reopened its doors to the public. The renowned 19th-century village, showcasing original structures and artifacts from that era, was a prominent attraction in Quebec during the 1980s before operating solely as a filming location until 1996.
Thibault Chamot and Charlotte Winterhalter, the current owners, have been diligently restoring the village in Rawdon, Quebec’s Lanaudière region, since acquiring it six years ago. Their vision is to transform it back into a popular tourist destination.
Upon receiving a grant from Tourisme Québec, the couple expedited the renovation process, enhancing the pioneer village with modern amenities like intricate lighting and a comprehensive sound system. Quebec Treasury Board President, France-Élaine Duranceau, disclosed the $2.3 million funding from the provincial tourism recovery program, PARIT, praising the site’s international allure and tourism prospects.
Chamot expressed gratitude for the support, acknowledging that without it, the project would have taken much longer to reach its current state. The revitalized Canadiana Village aims to offer visitors an immersive museum experience rather than a passive viewing one.
This summer, the site features a special live performance by local artists from Cirque Alfonse, showcasing traditional Lanaudière culture through captivating acts like log rolling and axe juggling. The village has gradually reopened over the past two years, expanding its offerings from weekend shows to a diverse schedule of events, including circus performances and a Christmas market.
Looking ahead, Chamot and Winterhalter aspire to preserve both the historical significance of the village and its cinematic heritage. Through innovative lighting and sound installations, they aim to engage visitors’ imaginations in an interactive setting previously exclusive to film productions.
In the coming months, a live light and sound spectacle is set to debut, encouraging guests to craft their own narratives through a blend of soundscapes and lighting effects. The ongoing transformation of Canadiana Village reflects a commitment to preserving the past while embracing new opportunities for cultural exploration and creative expression.
