The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman following a wellness check conducted by the Burnaby RCMP. Upon receiving a request from health authority officials on March 18, the Burnaby RCMP proceeded with the wellness check at the woman’s residence.
According to the IIO, a police officer entered the woman’s apartment in a residential complex around 2 p.m. PT on the same day and discovered her unresponsive. Subsequently, she was transported by ambulance to a hospital and was pronounced deceased the following day.
The investigation by the IIO aims to determine if the actions or lack thereof by the police are linked to the woman’s passing. The identity of the woman has not been disclosed at this time. Should the inquiry reveal potential wrongdoing by the officers, the chief civilian director of the IIO has the authority to recommend charges to Crown prosecutors.
The IIO serves as an independent civilian oversight body responsible for examining incidents involving police officers or detention guards in British Columbia that lead to significant injury or loss of life. Individuals with relevant information regarding this case are encouraged to reach out to the office for assistance.
