This decision came after the implementation of tariffs by the U.S. under the Trump administration, prompting Mousseau to emphasize building sustainable trade relationships with countries other than the U.S.
Similarly, Authentic Indigenous Seafood, a cooperative of Indigenous fisheries in B.C. and Nunavut, ceased doing business in the U.S. due to trade barriers. Gordon Sterritt, CEO of the co-op, mentioned that the suspension of duty exemptions on goods valued under $800 US led to logistical challenges and increased costs, making it unfeasible for small businesses to operate in the U.S. market. Consequently, the company is exploring opportunities in markets like Mexico and Japan for expansion.
However, Tribal Spirit, a Quebec-based business specializing in Indigenous products, faces limitations in diversifying beyond North America as the majority of their clientele are Indigenous peoples in the region. Despite experiencing random tariffs on certain products, the company aims to continue serving its North American customer base, with about 20% of its business reliant on the U.S. market. Robert Todd, the co-owner, highlighted the challenges posed by fluctuating tariff rates, impacting the prices of their goods for American customers.
As businesses navigate the complexities of international trade, Todd emphasized the importance of perseverance and adaptability in overcoming tariff-related hurdles. Despite the uncertainties caused by trade policies, Tribal Spirit remains committed to providing unique products and services to their customers while striving to mitigate the impacts of tariffs on their business operations.
