Ingamo Hall Friendship Centre in Inuvik is undergoing significant renovations this summer. The log cabin structure is receiving new foundation pads, with a local team of contractors managing the project. Terrance Allen, the owner of Northernlite Contracting, mentioned that the initial phase involved constructing over one hundred pads to address the building’s sagging issue. Currently, less than twenty pads remain to be installed, and the team is striving to complete the work by the autumn.
Marlene Peffer, the executive director of Ingamo Hall, revealed that the renovation was scheduled to commence in December 2025, but due to shipping delays, construction was delayed until March 2026. Peffer, who has a personal history with the center, expressed her pride in contributing to the community-based programs at Ingamo Hall, recalling fond memories of spending time there during her youth.
Looking ahead to the upcoming fall season, the staff is gearing up for after-school activities and fostering connections between youth and elders. Peffer emphasized the center’s commitment to expanding its programs, including plans for drum dancing, traditional food and harvesting activities, and more community initiatives.
The majority of programs and projects at Ingamo Hall are supported through funding proposals. Peffer encouraged community members to engage with the center and collaborate on introducing new and diverse activities for families in the area. Brian Kudlak, the elders and youth coordinator, highlighted the busy September calendar, mentioning an upcoming cookout to celebrate the completion of the foundation work.
Reflecting on his role at the center, Kudlak expressed his satisfaction with working alongside his culture and elders, emphasizing the importance of passing on traditions to the younger generation. Overall, the community eagerly anticipates the enhanced offerings and opportunities that will be available at Ingamo Hall in the coming months.
