A spelunker has been successfully rescued from a vertical entrapment at Rat’s Nest Cave in Canmore, Alberta, utilizing innovative underground radio technology developed by volunteers. The incident occurred on Saturday when the individual got stuck in a narrow section called the “Psych Squeeze” around 11:30 a.m.
Search and Rescue Alberta coordinated the operation, enlisting the Alberta/BC Cave Rescue team to assist. The rescue efforts involved using hammer drills to dislodge rocks, enabling the caver to be extracted gradually at a pace of “inches per hour.”
After a painstaking process, the man was liberated around 10 p.m. and eventually emerged from the cave close to midnight. The operation engaged a team of 13 cave rescuers, 10 firefighters, and two Kananaskis Mountain rescue members.
Notably, a cave radio system known as QDX-M, capable of transmitting signals through solid rock for over 500 meters, was deployed in a live rescue operation for the first time. This technology, developed by members of Alberta/BC Cave Rescue within Search and Rescue Alberta, addresses the challenges of conventional communication methods such as phones, radios, or GPS in subterranean environments.
The new radios are described as more compact and lighter than traditional analog cave radios, offering enhanced text-based communication capabilities for cave rescuers. The release highlights that the volunteer-built QDX-M technology is not commercially available at a reasonable cost, emphasizing the significant contributions of cavers with expertise in electrical engineering and amateur radio.
John Alexander, CEO of Search and Rescue Alberta, commended the collaborative efforts of multiple emergency response agencies in the successful Rat’s Nest rescue. He praised the dedication and ingenuity of the 1,500 volunteer search and rescue professionals who continually strive to overcome challenges, demonstrating their commitment to saving lives.
