“Inquest reveals baby’s sepsis death after unauthorized biopsy”

A baby girl, Willow Rose Courtney-Thompson, passed away from sepsis following a biopsy performed without parental consent, an inquest revealed. Willow was born prematurely at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford on October 12, and ten days later underwent a rectal biopsy without proper authorization from her parents, Joseph and Lauren. Unfortunately, Willow developed E.Coli sepsis after being discharged just ten hours post-biopsy, leading to her tragic demise.

The Oxfordshire Coroner’s Court highlighted multiple errors that contributed to Willow’s death, including the lack of privacy during the biopsy procedure and the absence of pre-procedure antibiotics. The inquest concluded that Willow could have survived had she been monitored in the hospital for 24 hours post-biopsy. Moreover, there were missed opportunities to identify and treat signs of sepsis promptly.

Joseph and Lauren, from Brackley, Northants., expressed their hope that lessons would be learned to prevent similar tragedies in the future. They emphasized the importance of proper communication and informed consent in medical procedures. The grieving parents shared fond memories of Willow, describing her as a cheerful and beloved addition to their family despite her short life.

Following Willow’s untimely death, her parents sought legal advice to investigate the circumstances surrounding her care. Their lawyer highlighted concerns about the care provided to Willow and stressed the importance of learning from this tragedy to enhance patient safety. Professor Andrew Brent, Chief Medical Officer at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, expressed regret over the shortcomings in Willow’s care and offered sincere apologies to the family.

Efforts have been made to review and improve clinical practices to prevent similar incidents in the future. While acknowledging the past mistakes, the medical team is dedicated to enhancing patient care and safety to avoid such heartbreaking outcomes.
