“Inuvik Gas Defends Rate Hike to Ensure Energy Security”

Inuvik Gas Ltd. defends its decision to raise natural gas rates, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a consistent energy supply for Inuvik residents. Responding to concerns raised to the N.W.T. Public Utilities Board (PUB), Inuvik Gas stated that the proposed rate hike is essential due to genuine cost pressures, significant investments in energy security, and the necessity of maintaining safe and reliable energy services in Inuvik.

The announcement made in July outlined a planned increase of $10 per gigajoule in September. Residents expressed worries about affordability and the essential nature of home heating in Inuvik, prompting calls for more transparency in how the rates were determined. In response, Robin Gaskell, Inuvik Gas’s general manager, highlighted the rising transportation costs for natural gas supply and recent company expansions in 2025 and 2026 as key factors driving the rate adjustment.

Inuvik Gas emphasized the need for substantial investments due to declining production at the Ikhil Joint Venture gas field and operational challenges like delayed propane supply transport caused by road closures. Despite cost increases, the company noted that its rates had remained unchanged since 2012.

Regarding queries about the impact of the proposed M18 well on costs, Inuvik Gas acknowledged the potential positive effects on future gas supply but cited uncertainties that hindered comprehensive planning. Gaskell explained that current rate evaluations must consider existing and foreseeable costs rather than speculative future developments. Any cost reductions resulting from the M18 well would be factored into future rate assessments.

The rate hike, scheduled for September 1, aims to cover necessary expenses for natural gas supply and ensure modest shareholder returns. In case PUB deliberations extend past the implementation date, Inuvik Gas has requested an interim rate increase to sustain operations during the decision-making process. The company assured that if the hike were ultimately rejected, any excess charges would be refunded to customers.
