Among the remaining deceased hostages are Israeli citizen Ran Gvili, 24, and Thai national Suthisak Rintalak, 43, both of whom have been released by Hamas except for their bodies still in Gaza. The slow progress in the exchange of bodies and prisoners has hindered advancement on the second stage of the Gaza peace plan proposed by President Donald Trump, which includes governance arrangements, troop withdrawals, disarmament of Hamas, and reconstruction efforts.
Israel has released nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and returned the bodies of 345 individuals as part of the peace process. The conflict that began on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties and destruction, with the UN estimating a long and costly reconstruction process ahead.
