“Judge Approves Revealing Officer’s Identity in Nooran Rezayi Case”

A Quebec Superior Court judge has granted approval for an agreement that will enable the family of Nooran Rezayi, a 15-year-old who was fatally shot by Longueuil police in September 2025, to discover the identity of the officer responsible for the shooting.

Nooran was sitting with friends on the curb of a residential street in the Longueuil borough of Saint-Hubert when police arrived in response to a 911 call. Tragically, he was shot and killed within moments of their arrival, despite being unarmed. As a result, Rezayi’s family, along with some families of other teenagers present that day, have filed a lawsuit against the city of Longueuil and its police force.

The legal action sought to reveal the names of the officer who shot Rezayi and the other officers present at the scene. The approved agreement will now allow the families access to this information, although strict restrictions on its publication and dissemination are in place.

Yalda Machouf-Khadir, the lawyer representing the families, stated that while the families and their legal teams will receive the officers’ names, they are bound by a publication ban preventing the public disclosure of this sensitive information.

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), Quebec’s police watchdog, has completed an investigation into the incident and forwarded the findings to Quebec’s public prosecution service. If charges are brought in connection with the incident, the officers’ names will be disclosed.

Machouf-Khadir added that the agreement also grants the families access to certain documents and information regarding the police operation on that day, albeit with heavy redactions. Despite this progress, she emphasized that the family will persist in seeking further answers.

The city of Longueuil had initially opposed the public release of the officers’ names, citing numerous death threats received by the police following the incident. They recounted an incident where a teenager posted a picture of the suspected officer on social media and offered a reward for the officer’s harm, leading to the officer and his family being placed under protection.

The teenager responsible for the threat was subsequently apprehended and convicted of harassment. The city of Longueuil did not provide an immediate comment on the matter.
