During a 2008 police interview, Duane (Keffe D) Davis revealed to detectives that his nephew Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson was the one who shot and killed rapper Tupac Shakur. Davis, who claimed he was present in the car with Anderson during the incident, is currently facing charges for allegedly orchestrating the 1996 murder of the 25-year-old hip-hop icon in Las Vegas.
In the recorded interview with Los Angeles police, Davis recounted that he and Anderson were in a white Cadillac with two other individuals when they pulled up next to a car carrying Shakur and hip-hop mogul Marion (Suge) Knight. Davis expressed regret that he did not take action, as the setup was not favorable for an attack from his side. Subsequently, he passed his gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who declined to use it. Anderson, seated in the back, then took the weapon and fired the fatal shots, as described by Davis in the audio played for the jury.
This was the first time Davis openly discussed his role in the shooting with authorities. The interview holds significant weight in the prosecution’s case against the 63-year-old Davis, with prosecutors emphasizing his own admissions in police interviews, podcasts, and his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”
Despite his previous claims to the FBI implicating others in Shakur’s murder, Davis has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His defense attorney dismissed the prosecution’s account as fiction and challenged the lack of evidence supporting Davis’s statements. Initially brought in by Los Angeles detectives to discuss the 1997 shooting death of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., Davis was later cleared of involvement in that case.
Prosecutors argue that Davis breached confidentiality by publicly discussing the shooting in various forums over the years, thereby waiving any protection granted during his initial police interviews. They allege that Shakur’s killing was a retaliation for an earlier altercation involving Anderson and Shakur’s entourage at the MGM Grand, where Davis was present but not involved.
