Keir Starmer is set to engage with global allies during the G20 summit for crucial discussions regarding Donald Trump’s initiative to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
The Prime Minister refrained from openly criticizing the US president’s 28-point peace plan but acknowledged the need for enhancements. Amid Trump’s ultimatum for Ukraine to respond by November 27, UK’s stance was clarified.
Prior to the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Mr. Starmer expressed determination to collaborate with international leaders to achieve a fair and enduring peace resolution. Highlighting the urgency, he emphasized the importance of refining the current proposal to advance negotiations.
Critically addressing Russia’s actions, Starmer pointed out the country’s continuous military aggression in Ukraine, contrasting with diplomatic gestures. Recent events, including Russian drone attacks causing civilian casualties, underscore the need for genuine commitment to peace.
In response to talks between Volodymyr Zelensky and US Vice President JD Vance on peace efforts, Starmer aligned UK’s support with Trump’s peace initiative. The leaked 28-point plan, featuring a ceasefire and territorial concessions by Ukraine, was discussed during the meeting.
The proposed plan entails substantial territorial concessions by Ukraine to Russia, along with military reductions and economic agreements. Despite controversies surrounding NATO membership and election timelines, the plan received backing from President Putin.
Following a discussion with France, Germany, and Ukraine to strategize on ending the conflict, Starmer reiterated support for a comprehensive peace solution involving Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. The commitment to inclusive peace efforts, aligned with Trump’s vision, was emphasized during the talks.
