The Kitchener Market is preparing to enhance its temporary operations in the upcoming month, enabling the majority of vendors to resume business activities while the city progresses with the restoration of the market building following a fire in July.
Commencing on September 5, the city will implement “temporary infrastructure and services” to facilitate most market vendors to operate in a modified manner. This expansion will provide shoppers with access to a broader selection of products, including meat and dairy items.
Andrew Sturgess, the city’s director of business growth and entrepreneurship, expressed enthusiasm about welcoming back most vendors next month as efforts continue to fully restore the market.
Following a fire incident on July 12 at a vendor stall on the market’s second floor, causing an estimated $50,000 in damages and prompting the closure of the indoor market, the recent announcement comes approximately five weeks later.
Despite the building closure, the market has remained operational every Saturday, serving thousands of customers via the city’s temporary outdoor market.
Vendors previously raised concerns about the lack of clarity regarding the closure and the duration of their inability to operate indoors. The recovery process, which involves extensive cleaning and remediation due to smoke and soot contamination throughout the facility, is expected to take months.
Since July 18, vendor rental fees have been waived, and a staff report presented to Kitchener city council on August 24 proposes temporary fee reductions for vendors operating under the interim setup. The city plans to invest between $240,000 and $270,000 in vendor support, temporary infrastructure, services, and rent reductions over a projected six-month recovery period.
Sturgess emphasized the market’s significance to the community, with over 155 years of history. Restoration planning and remediation efforts are ongoing in collaboration with insurers, public health authorities, and contractors, although a specific date for the full reopening of the market building has not been provided yet.
In the meantime, residents can continue to visit the Kitchener Market every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
