“Labour Peer Champions Affordability for Families”

In discussions with residents across various communities, concerns about the rising cost of living are consistently expressed. This issue is particularly significant to me, as I have actively supported initiatives to make essential supplies more affordable for families, such as advocating for accessible infant formula and promoting financial literacy to combat predatory lending practices.

Recently, I engaged with a diverse range of individuals including Iceland employees and customers nationwide to compile insights outlined in the ‘Iceland Manifesto’, released just before the previous election. The feedback emphasized the widespread sentiment of feeling overlooked by policymakers and the ongoing struggles with the affordability of essential needs like childcare, veterinary care, utilities, and groceries. Addressing these challenges remains a top priority as the cost of living continues to weigh heavily on people’s daily lives.

My appointment as a Labour peer is driven by a commitment to bridge the gap between local businesses and the broader society by representing their voices in Westminster. I am humbled by the expertise and quality of discussions in the House of Lords and aim to leverage my background as a retail leader and entrepreneur to contribute distinctively. Drawing from firsthand experience managing a family-run enterprise that provides jobs and access to affordable, quality food for millions, I aspire to offer valuable perspectives on economic issues.

Having navigated the complexities of meeting payroll obligations and understanding the struggles of families striving to afford nutritious meals daily, I am attuned to the realities faced by businesses and households. The current Labour Government’s focus on fostering economic growth and eliminating barriers aligns with the need for private enterprises to thrive through investment confidence and a supportive regulatory environment.

While I acknowledge that Westminster does not possess all the solutions, I firmly believe in the importance of individuals with practical insights contributing candidly to the decision-making process. In my new capacity, I am committed to upholding this principle and advocating for meaningful change that reflects the needs of both businesses and communities.
