Ottawa is set to introduce biometrics collection services in Labrador next year, a move that has been hailed as a significant development by one local resident. Biometrics, such as fingerprints and photographs, are required for most individuals applying for immigration to Canada. Currently, residents of Labrador must travel to access these services, creating financial and logistical challenges.
Recently, Federal Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Minister Lena Diab announced the establishment of a new biometrics site in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The provincial government of Newfoundland and Labrador confirmed that the site is expected to open in the spring of 2027.
Erma Nardon, the president of the Filipino Association of Goose Bay-Labrador, expressed her excitement about the news, emphasizing the positive impact of having biometric services available locally. Nardon explained that the convenience of accessing these services close to home not only reduces the financial burden on newcomers but also eliminates the need for costly travel expenses to distant locations like St. John’s or Halifax.
Nardon highlighted the stress and expenses associated with traveling for a brief appointment, underscoring the uncertainty of travel due to weather conditions in Labrador. She praised the decision to bring biometrics services to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, describing it as a huge relief for the community.
Anticipating that the initiative will enhance the sense of welcome for immigrants in the region, Nardon believes it will encourage newcomers to settle and establish their lives in Labrador. She credited Labrador MP Philip Earle for advocating for the introduction of biometrics services in the area, noting the positive response from the Filipino community during his election campaign.
In a recent news release, Labrador Affairs Minister Lela Evans emphasized the improved accessibility of services in Labrador with the implementation of biometrics. The addition of biometrics collection services in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is expected to streamline the immigration process, saving time and money for individuals seeking these services.
