Two legal actions were initiated on Wednesday challenging the recent series of federally funded television advertisements by U.S. President Donald Trump. The ads, which have been airing since September and have cost over $12 million, have faced criticism for promoting Trump’s political message using taxpayer money. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) and a coalition, including the non-partisan watchdog Common Cause, filed separate lawsuits alleging these ads are illegal government-sponsored propaganda. Both lawsuits seek to halt the use of federal funds for these ads, which have been scrutinized for glorifying Trump as the midterm elections approach.
In response to the backlash, Trump defended the ads as positive promotion for the country but stated he would transition to funding them through his super PAC, MAGA Inc. However, a new ad aired on Tuesday, indicating continued government funding for promotional purposes. DNC Chair Ken Martin condemned the ads as a misuse of taxpayer dollars aimed at bolstering Republicans in the upcoming elections.
The legality of the ads has been questioned by legal experts, citing potential violations of federal statutes against using appropriated funds for propaganda. Trump’s plan to use his super PAC to finance the ads has raised concerns about independence between the PAC and the administration. Democrats in Congress have called for investigations into the matter, asserting that the ads constitute an illegal use of taxpayer money. The White House has defended the ads as public service announcements similar to past administrations’ practices.
As the midterms approach, Trump’s Republican Party is projected to lose control of the House of Representatives. Trump has proposed sending direct payments to millions of Americans, but this initiative has not gained significant support in Congress. Additionally, the administration has distributed payments to individuals purchasing health insurance through healthcare.gov, attributing the payments to excessive fees under the previous administration led by Joe Biden.
