Kawhi Leonard made a strong return to the Raptors in their season opener against the Chicago Bulls, contributing 23 points to Toronto’s dominant 135-92 victory on Wednesday. Despite his impressive performance, Leonard faced challenges in shooting efficiency, going 5 for 17 on field goals, including 2 for 6 on three-pointers.
The Raptors, now 1-0 for the season, showcased their dominance early on, leading by a staggering 48 points at one stage during their home game. Leonard, who was part of a significant trade with the Los Angeles Clippers in the summer, played a total of 24 minutes in the game.
Joining Leonard in scoring 23 points were Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley, with Barnes also contributing six rebounds and five assists, while Quickley dished out seven assists. On the Bulls side, Jalen Smith and former Raptor Norm Powell each scored 15 points, with Smith grabbing eight rebounds.
Chicago struggled with poor shooting throughout the game, managing a field goal percentage of 31.8%, including a dismal 11.1% from three-point range. The team also faced challenges at the free-throw line, making just 72.3% of their attempts.
Coach Darko Rajakovic had hinted at Leonard facing some minutes restrictions due to conditioning concerns, but Toronto’s commanding lead allowed for the starters to rest for most of the fourth quarter. The Raptors maintained their momentum throughout, with a standout moment being a 9-0 run at the start of the second quarter that put the game well out of reach for the Bulls.
Toronto’s explosive start was highlighted by a 43-point first quarter, a feat they achieved five times in a single period last season. Looking ahead, the Raptors will face the Washington Wizards next, while the Bulls are set to take on the Milwaukee Bucks in their upcoming game.
