The situation escalated on Monday when U.S. President Donald Trump announced potential additional tariffs on automobiles and auto parts in the upcoming year. Fragiskatos indicated that if no trade agreement is reached and local industries continue to suffer from tariffs, the government is prepared to intervene and provide support, although specific details were not disclosed. He hinted at forthcoming announcements of various assistance programs for impacted businesses.
During a funding announcement event in south London, Fragiskatos mentioned Ottawa’s commitment of nearly $19 million to support the expansion of Generate Upcycle’s anaerobic digestion facility, which converts organic food waste into natural gas and fertilizer. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson highlighted the investment as a significant step towards enhancing Canada’s energy independence, noting that the upgraded facility could power around 4,500 homes annually in southwestern Ontario.
In response to calls for transparency regarding the failed trade deal with the U.S., Fragiskatos defended the government’s decision not to disclose all details publicly, citing concerns about jeopardizing future negotiations. He emphasized the importance of standing up for Canada’s interests and not settling for unfavorable trade agreements.
