Canada, along with France, the U.K., and Australia, has expressed deep “regret” over the delay of the Palestinian presidential and legislative elections. Originally scheduled for next month, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed the elections to September 2027.
In a joint statement, Canada and its allies highlighted that the postponement robs Palestinians of their voting opportunity, emphasizing the vital role elections play in the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to reform. The statement also recognizes the significant challenges hindering the conduct of elections in line with international standards.
While Canada was part of the nations that acknowledged the state of Palestine last year, this recognition was contingent on specific conditions, including holding elections in 2026. The Palestinian Authority has cited the ongoing conflict in Gaza as a barrier to conducting the vote.
