“Man Arrested After Using Sledgehammer on Police Building”

A man in Brandon was taken into custody by police after he used a sledgehammer to break a window at a police building. The 41-year-old suspect shattered both the inner and outer panes of the window at around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, according to a statement from Brandon police.

When officers confronted the man as he tried to walk away, he ignored their commands to drop the weapon. Despite being hit with a Taser, the man continued to resist. Another officer then used a “less-than-lethal” firearm when the suspect refused to halt his advance towards an intersection.

Although the man eventually dropped the sledgehammer, he did not surrender immediately and had to be subdued before being arrested. Brandon police Chief Tyler Bates emphasized the importance of protecting public buildings and the individuals who rely on them in a statement to CBC News.

The man, known to the police, is facing multiple charges, including mischief over $5,000, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, and resisting arrest. The case has not been referred to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba. The suspect was expected to appear in court on Monday.
