Man Fatally Shot by RCMP in Maltempec Standoff

A man has tragically lost his life following an incident where RCMP officers were called to a residence in Maltempec, a community in northeast New Brunswick near Caraquet. The RCMP members from Tracadie, Neguac, Caraquet, and Lamèque were summoned to Lavigne Road in Maltempec on Tuesday around 5:40 p.m. in response to a report concerning a man in mental distress with a firearm.

The man involved was uncooperative and discharged his weapon at the officers, disregarding commands to drop it. In response to the escalating situation, the RCMP officers fired their weapons at the man. Despite receiving first aid at the scene, the man succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The specific details such as the man’s age, whether there were any other injuries or individuals present at the residence, were not disclosed in the RCMP news release. CBC has reached out to the RCMP for further information, including the number of officers present at the scene.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), an independent agency, is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and reviewing the actions taken by the police during the incident.
